Tip #10 Getting the Most out of Your Corn Cob Pipe: Stop Smoking Cigarettes by Smoking a Pipe? |
Let the debate begin! In 1964 the US Surgeon General’s Advisory Committee wrote the following:
“Thomas Edison was no doubt wrong in alleging that cigarettes permanently damage the cells of the brain but he was right in his view that cigarettes are more damaging than pipes or cigars. In part at least, this is because cigarette smoke is usually inhaled deep into the lungs. Some cigarette smokers do not inhale the smoke, while some cigar and pipe smokers do inhale. In general, however, the conversion to cigarette smoking meant a phenomenal increase in smoke inhalation.”
Or how about this quote:
“But other research, both epidemiological and pathological, soon provided further evidence for the case against smoking. one particularly significant study by Hammond and Horn, funded by the American Cancer Society, was based on a prospective design that involved use of volunteers to locate hundreds of thousands of smokers and non- smokers and to track their health
over time. Even the early results, published beginning in 1954, showed that age- adjusted death
rates were at least three times higher among male smokers than among nonsmokers and five
times higher for heavy smokers. Interestingly, both authors were themselves smokers and gave up cigarettes in favor of pipe smoking as a result of their research.”
My conclusion: IF you MUST smoke, smoke a pipe and don’t inhale.
